Ride in Kane was introduced to Kane County in early 2008 and unites all of the county's individual dial-a-ride programs under one umbrella. It provides curb-to-curb service, 24 hours a day, for seniors and disabled residents, from their homes to just about anywhere in the county. Fares start at $3 for the first 10 miles and a mileage charge is tacked on thereafter. Eligible riders must preregister with Ride in Kane. Residents who are registered for the previous Dial-A-Ride program will be automatically registered for Ride in Kane and can begin scheduling rides immediately without additional registration required.

Criteria for Eligibility to Register:

  • 65 years old or older
  • Documented permanent disability
  • RTA Reduced Fare Card

Features of the New Program:

  • Curb-to-curb service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Trips can be reserved 1 to 7 days in advance.
  • Arrange for a Subscription service for travel required 2 days or more per week to the same location, at the same time, for an extended period of time (work, doctor appointments, etc.)
  • One travel companion may ride with a registered rider at no additional charge.
  • Group trips (3 or more riders who depart from and return to the same location) receive a discount.

RTA Senior Ride Free Smart Cards and Reduced Fare Cards

The Senior Ride Free Smart Card allows senior citizens to ride all RTA services for free and the Reduced Fare Card allows qualified persons with disabilities to ride all RTA services for a reduced fare. Both programs are offered by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). These services include CTA buses and rapid transit, Pace buses, and Metra trains in the six-county region served by the RTA (Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry and Will counties).

The permits take approximate 3 to 4 weeks to process after an application is made. They are valid for four years from the date of issuance. Applications for senior citizens are taken at the Utility Billing and Collections office. Applicants must apply in person and bring the following items:

•  One 1½” x 1½” color photograph clearly showing your face and shoulders.
•  Legal document showing date of birth.
•  A driver’s license, passport, State of IL ID, U.S. Immigration Alien Registration, or other official government ID with a photograph and birthdate.

*Please note: Persons with disabilities must apply directly through the RTA. More information is available on the RTA Reduced Fare page of their web site.

Information on replacing cards that have been lost or stolen may be obtained by calling 312-913-3110. Additional information on the RTA Reduced Fare Card and the RTA Reduced Fare Card is available online.
